Next generation UltraFan aerospace engine build begins in Derby
We have started building the world’s largest Civil Aerospace engine, the UltraFan, at our site in Derby. In keeping with the UK’s net zero and jet zero targets, it will be the most fuel efficient engine we have produced and the first test run of the engine will be on 100% sustainable aviation fuel. The engine will have a fan diameter of 140 inches and will be completed by the end of the year. 

The UltraFan has received support from the UK Government’s Aerospace Technology Institute.

 

Commenting on the development, Business Secretary, Kwasi Kwarteng, said:

 

“The UltraFan project is a perfect example of how we are working with industry to deliver green, sustainable flight for decades to come. Backed with significant government support, this project represents the scale of ambition for Britain's crucial aerospace sector. Companies like Rolls-Royce are playing a critical role as we build back greener from the pandemic and we are committed to giving the whole aerospace sector the support it needs to innovate and reach new heights.”

 

 

 
Rolls-Royce leads FTSE companies in the Race to Zero
Rolls-Royce was a founding signatory of the UN’s Race to Zero to meet net zero emissions by 2050 and now the UK Government has called for other companies to join this initiative.

 

We have halved the greenhouse gas emissions associated with our operations and facilities since 2014 and we are on track to meet our 2030 target of net zero emissions across our footprint. Recycling and repurposing are now firmly embedded in our manufacturing processes with up to 95% of a jet engine able to be recycled and our newest Civil Aerospace engine, UltraFan, will use carbon titanium fan blades and a composite casing that reduces weight by up to 1,500lb per aircraft.

Rolls-Royce has committed to enabling the industries in which we operate – some of which are among the hardest to abate – achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and we welcome the Government’s continued support in helping us achieve that goal. In the last few months alone, we’ve taken significant steps including successfully testing 100% sustainable aviation fuels in our current generation of aircraft engines in Derby and our own Spirit of Innovation all-electric test aircraft, which is part funded by UK Government via the ATI, will get into the sky within the coming weeks.”

 

 

 
Rolls-Royce engines power first 100% sustainable-fuelled passenger flight
Our Trent XWB engines have powered the first 100% sustainable aviation fuelled (SAF) wide-body commercial passenger aircraft in a study on in-flight emissions being run by Airbus, German research centre DLR, Rolls-Royce and fuel producer Neste.  The study will look into the effects of 100% SAF on aircraft emissions and performance and its findings will ensure that the aviation sector is ready for the large-scale use of SAF to decarbonise the industry.
