Investing in the future of jet zero aerospace in the UK
“A great day for the UK” was how Kwasi Kwarteng, Secretary of State, BEIS, described the opening of the new Rolls-Royce civil aerospace testbed in Derby recently.  This £90m investment is the world’s largest indoor aerospace testbed and will test the next generation of aerospace engines we are designing and building in the UK.

Key facts

The world’s largest facility of its kind, with an indoor area of 7,500m2, larger than a premiership football pitch

Designed for sustainability, with integration of Sustainable Aviation Fuels designed from conception and fuel tanks capable of holding 140,000 litres of fuel; enough to fuel a family car 3,000 times

Cementing Derby as a UK and global aerospace hub; building upon more than 100 years of innovation

Built for the next-generation of engines, including UK Government supported UltraFan engine, which will be 25% more efficient than the first Trent engines when testing begins next year

UltraFan is underpinned by a network of UK academic partnerships spanning 16 Universities and University Technical Centres across the UK, from Strathclyde to Bristol

Leveraging a supply chain of more than 200 companies from around the UK

Made possible by a team from across 19 Rolls-Royce sites in the UK and globally
Commenting on the opening, Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng, said:

“This testbed here in Derby shows that the UK remains a global leader in aeroengine technology. I’m proud that we’re supporting Rolls-Royce’s development of the highly-efficient UltraFan engine, as well as investment in green and cutting-edge aerospace technology here in the UK that will create high-skilled, well-paid jobs for decades to come."
Warren East, Chief Executive, Rolls-Royce, added:

“Testbed 80 is the largest facility of its type in the world. However, it is not only big, it is also smart and features the most advanced testing technology we have ever used. As the new global hub of our testing capability, it will support the next stage of our UltraFan programme as we begin ground testing the first demonstrator in 2022. This incredible piece of infrastructure is a very visible sign of our commitment to this site and secures the future of Derby as the home of large engine development.”
